JP Morgan Video Interview: Prove Original Thinking

JP Morgan’s 2027 Video Interview for CIB Innovation Development is asking whether you can earn the right to propose something new. A novel solution is credible only when the answer proves that you saw the problem more clearly than the first description allowed.

The real question

Keep the original wording intact:

Tell me about a time when your understanding of a problem provided you with the ability to generate a novel solution. Describe the situation, the actions you took, and the outcome.

How you lose points

  • Using a classroom cliché: You describe brainstorming without a decision, experiment, or implemented change.
  • Making novelty the goal: You choose an unusual approach even though a simpler established method would have worked.
  • Erasing other people: Your story implies that stakeholders accepted the idea immediately and contributed nothing.
  • Offering no test: You move from insight to rollout without checking the most dangerous assumption.
  • Ending vaguely: You say the solution was successful but never define the baseline or improvement.

How you pass

Structure the story as a change in understanding. The initial brief points in one direction. Your investigation exposes a different constraint. That discovery creates a practical option, and a small test demonstrates whether it deserves adoption.

Consider a hypothetical student society with falling event attendance. Instead of adding more speakers, you compared registration and arrival records and found that most drop-off occurred among first-time attendees who did not know anyone. You introduced topic-based welcome groups, piloted them at one event, and tracked a higher arrival rate among new registrants. The solution was modest, but it was novel because it addressed the social barrier rather than the event content.

  • Define what everyone first believed the problem was.
  • Show the inquiry that challenged that belief.
  • Connect the insight directly to the design choice.
  • Describe the trial, feedback, or control you used.
  • Quantify the outcome when the source evidence supports it.

The differentiator is causal reasoning. The interviewer should be able to trace why your new understanding made the new solution sensible.
