Prove that the learning was deliberate
In this 2027 Bank of America Behavioral Video Interview question, the interviewer is not asking for a list of software. The evidence comes from the decisions you made between recognizing a gap and producing dependable work.
Use every part of the prompt
The question asks for the project, tools, impact, and continued use:
Describe a time where your work on a project or problem allowed you to learn a new technical skill or technique outside of the classroom. What was the project? What tools did you use to develop your knowledge or skillset? How did this impact the work you were trying to complete? How do you use this knowledge or skillset today?
Weak structures break here
- Starting with the course. Begin with the project problem that forced the learning.
- Listing too many resources. Select the few tools that changed your understanding or execution.
- Ignoring quality control. State how you checked that the new method worked correctly.
- Using vague impact. Connect the skill to accuracy, speed, clarity, or a better decision.
- Ending in the past. Show how the capability affects your work now.
Use gap, practice, proof, reuse
Define the gap in one sentence. Describe a focused learning loop: documentation, a small exercise, feedback from a knowledgeable person, and a check against a trusted result. Then explain how you introduced the technique into the project without putting the outcome at risk.
For example, a hypothetical candidate could learn a visualization library to make a complex analysis understandable to nontechnical teammates. The answer becomes stronger when the candidate explains how the chart was tested with users, what misunderstanding it removed, and how the same design principles are now used in other work.
