How you lose points
- Leading with labels. A role name has little value without the activities that make it attractive.
- Listing unrelated options. Breadth can look like avoidance when there is no common thread.
- Borrowing website language. Polished phrases do not substitute for a personal reason.
- Giving unsupported strengths. Saying you are analytical or commercial needs an example.
- Forgetting the why now. The answer should show how your interest developed through action.
How you pass
Build the response around a preference, a work feature, and proof. Start with the area or role. Describe the kind of problem, interaction, or output that appeals to you. Then cite a concrete experience that let you test that preference.
In a hypothetical example, a student may be drawn to roles that require turning varied inputs into a clear recommendation. The student explains a team assignment that involved comparing alternatives, challenging assumptions, and presenting a choice. The closing sentence states what the candidate wants to learn next. That structure sounds intentional without overstating certainty.
