JP Morgan Video Interview: Handling an Unfamiliar Task

JP Morgan Video Interview: Handling an Unfamiliar Task

The 2027 JP Morgan Video Interview for Investment Banking is not asking whether you felt comfortable. It tests what you do when the method is missing but the outcome still matters.

The actual interview question

Here is the complete wording:

Provide an example of a time when you were asked to do something new which you had not done before. How did you approach the task and what was the outcome?

How you lose points

  • Choosing a trivial first: A new software button does not create enough uncertainty to demonstrate judgment.
  • Pretending you knew everything: Confidence without a learning process makes the story less credible.
  • Researching without a decision: Reading and asking questions are inputs, not an approach, unless they change what you do.
  • Delegating the uncertainty: Seeking help is useful, but handing the task to an expert avoids the behaviour being tested.
  • Reporting completion only: Finishing the task does not prove quality, impact, or learning.

How you pass

Choose a task with a real gap in your experience and a meaningful consequence. Define what was unfamiliar, what good performance required, and which risks you needed to control before describing your action.

Show how you decomposed the task. Separate what you could learn independently from what required an experienced check. Use a small test, interim review, or explicit quality standard to avoid discovering mistakes at the deadline.

For a hypothetical example, a candidate might be asked to build a financial model for a case competition without prior modelling experience. A strong response would identify the required outputs, study a relevant example, confirm assumptions with a teammate, test the model on simple inputs, and request a review before submission. This example is hypothetical; the candidate should replace it with a real task and evidence of the result.

  • Define the unfamiliar element and the required outcome.
  • Break the work into learnable and reviewable parts.
  • Use targeted support instead of vague requests for help.
  • Build in an early quality check.
  • Quantify the outcome and explain what you can now do differently.

The best story shows controlled learning. You moved quickly because you made uncertainty visible, not because you ignored it.
