BDO Group Exercise 2027: How to Stand Out in Discussion
The BDO group discussion case — commonly reported by candidates as "What are the three most important factors for this client engagement?" — is handled with a simple playbook: structure the discussion early, build on others' points, manage time, and summarize at the end. Assessors score collaboration and thinking, not volume — the loudest candidate rarely wins.
What This BDO Group Discussion Case Assesses
Group exercises test how you operate in a team you'll never meet again — exactly like real client engagements. Assessors watch for structure (can you organize a messy discussion?), inclusion (do you bring quieter members in?), and judgment (are your points substantive?). Dominating, silent, or agreeable-but-empty performances all fail.
How to Answer This BDO Group Discussion Case
Play four roles across the exercise:
- The structurer (early). In the first minutes, propose a framework: "Let's list the factors, then rank them by impact on the client." Whoever structures the discussion shapes it — and assessors notice who did.
- The builder (throughout). Add substance to others' points rather than just agreeing: "Building on that cost point, I'd add that the client's cash position limits how long they can absorb it." Building shows listening plus thinking.
- The includer (midway). Invite a quieter member in: "You mentioned the market earlier — what's your view on ranking?" Inclusion is explicitly scored and costs you nothing.
- The summarizer (end). Volunteer to summarize the group's three factors with reasons. The summary is the last thing assessors hear and frames the whole discussion.
Example line to open: "Before we dive in, should we agree on what makes a factor 'important' — impact on the client's survival, or on the engagement's success?"
Common Mistakes
- Talking the most. Volume without substance is the classic group-exercise failure — assessors penalize domination.
- Saying nothing substantive. Agreeing politely for twenty minutes is invisible; you need two or three original points minimum.
- Ignoring the time. Groups that run out of time look unmanaged — keep an eye on the clock and steer toward conclusions.
Candidates commonly report that BDO assessors take detailed notes on who did what, not just the group's answer. Your individual behaviors — structuring, including, summarizing — are scored separately from whether the group picked the "right" three factors.

FAQ
Should I aim to lead the group? Lead through structure and inclusion, not authority. Facilitating well scores higher than bossing people around.
What if someone is dominating? Acknowledge their point, then redirect: "Good point — let's hear from others on this one." Calm redirection shows leadership.
What if the group disagrees with me? State your reasoning once, clearly. If the group goes another way, commit to the group's direction gracefully — adaptability is scored.
How do I prepare for the case content? You can't — the scenario is unseen. Prepare the behaviors instead: practice structuring discussions and summarizing under time pressure.
