This prompt tests the handoff, not the knowledge
The Bank of America 2027 Video Interview asks for a project where the candidate held specialist knowledge. The difficult part is proving that the knowledge crossed the gap to the rest of the team.
Candidates who prepare the actual prompt can choose a story with a visible before and after. Without that contrast, the answer often becomes a technical monologue.
The wording on screen
Candidates are asked:
Describe a time when you were working on a project where you were the subject matter expert on a specific topic. What was the goal of the project and how did you use your subject matter expertise to make sure everyone was able to understand what you were conveying?
Five gaps interviewers notice
- No audience diagnosis. The candidate never identifies what other people knew or needed.
- Too much background. The project goal disappears under a long explanation of the topic.
- A one-way delivery. Sending a document or presenting slides does not prove comprehension.
- No adaptation. The same explanation for every stakeholder suggests weak judgment.
- An outcome with no mechanism. The result needs to connect to the clearer understanding the candidate created.
Frame the story as a before and after
The before state covers the decision at stake and the audience's misunderstanding. The candidate then describes the translation choice, why that choice fit the audience, and how the explanation changed after feedback.
Specific evidence makes the story credible. A model was reduced to three drivers, a process was mapped visually, or a technical risk was converted into cost, timing, and control implications.
The after state shows what moved. The group reached a decision, completed the work with fewer revisions, or used the information correctly without relying on the expert for every step.
