What this is
In the Swire 2027 Finance Program Video Interview, this prompt examines how you operate when financial information does not reconcile or a decision is at risk. A credible story shows disciplined analysis and collaboration while keeping your own role distinct.
The real question
The answer must make both the financial issue and your role concrete:
Describe an experience where you contributed to resolving a financial issue, either as a leader or a team member. What was the issue and what role did you play?
How you lose points
- Choosing a non-financial conflict. The story needs a genuine financial consequence, not only a difficult colleague.
- Overclaiming leadership. Taking credit for every team action makes the example less believable.
- Describing activity instead of reasoning. Meetings and spreadsheets matter only when they advance the diagnosis.
- Skipping stakeholder judgment. Financial issues often require input or approval beyond the person doing the analysis.
- Leaving recurrence untouched. A one-off correction is weaker than a fix that also improves the process.
How you pass
Tell the story through ownership boundaries. Explain what you were accountable for, what required collaboration, and what evidence supported the final decision.
- State the decision at risk. Show why the issue mattered to reporting, budgeting, cash, or another verified context.
- Triangulate the evidence. Compare sources rather than trusting the first explanation.
- Communicate the finding plainly. Turn technical detail into a decision-ready summary.
- Build in a control. Add a reconciliation, review, or ownership step proportionate to the issue.
For example, a hypothetical team member could discover that a forecast used two different assumptions for the same cost driver. They might trace the source, align the assumptions with the accountable owners, rerun the analysis, and document a single input source for the next cycle. This displays financial discipline without pretending the work happened alone.
