Where answers break down
- Giving the project history: Too much setup leaves no time for contribution and impact.
- Confusing participation with ownership: Attending meetings is not a role.
- Presenting a solo rescue: Erasing teammates makes the collaboration claim less credible.
- Hiding the trade-off: A decision has meaning only when alternatives or constraints existed.
- Ending at submission: Completing the deliverable does not explain its quality or effect.
Build a contribution chain
Treat the answer as a compact chain of evidence. Start with the team's target. Then isolate your mandate, the choice you made, the way you coordinated with others, and the consequence.
- Use one sentence for context and one for your remit.
- Describe a decision that required analysis, prioritisation, or communication.
- Show how you brought teammates into the solution.
- Close with the result and what it proves about your working style.
Consider a hypothetical student consulting team that must recommend a new inventory process. You own the workflow analysis. When interviews reveal conflicting handoffs, you map the failure points, ask the team to test two revised options, and turn the findings into the final recommendation. The achievement is stronger because your analysis and the team's validation are both visible.
The interviewer should be able to repeat your role in one phrase after the answer ends. If that phrase is unclear, the story still belongs to the group rather than to you.
