McKinsey PST (Problem Solving Test): What It Was & What Replaced It
The McKinsey PST test (Problem Solving Test) was McKinsey's old paper-based screening exam: 26 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. McKinsey retired the PST years ago and replaced it with the Solve Game — so PST prep books are training you for a test that no longer exists.
The McKinsey PST Test: What It Was
The PST ran for over a decade as McKinsey's global screen. Candidates sat a proctored 60-minute test with three business case scenarios, each followed by data-interpretation and math questions. It tested the same underlying skills McKinsey still wants — quantitative reasoning, logical deduction, structured thinking — but in a static, multiple-choice format.
It was eventually retired because McKinsey wanted to assess how candidates think in dynamic, ambiguous situations — something a paper test can't capture.
What Replaced the McKinsey PST: The Solve Game
The Solve Game is the PST's successor and a fundamentally different assessment:
- Dynamic, not static. You manage evolving simulations (Red Rock Study's ecosystem, Sea Wolf's naval operation) instead of answering fixed questions.
- Process-scored, not answer-scored. McKinsey evaluates your decision-making over time — how you gather information, weigh trade-offs, and adapt.
- Untimed per question, timed overall. You manage your own pace across ~60–70 minutes, which tests prioritization the PST never did.
- No retakes, same stakes. Like the PST, it's a hard screen: fail and you don't reach interviews.
The skills overlap — quantitative reasoning still matters — but the format rewards different preparation.
McKinsey PST Test Prep vs. Solve Prep: What to Do Now
PST prep books build the wrong reflexes: picking among four options under a per-question clock. Solve rewards systems thinking, resource triage, and comfort with ambiguity — skills you only build by playing the actual games.
If your prep shelf is full of PST materials, retire them. Our 2027 McKinsey Solve Game, RedRock, Sea Wolf, Sustainable Futures Lab, Case Interview Interactive Simulations is built for the current assessment: interactive simulations of Red Rock, Sea Wolf, Sustainable Futures Lab, and the full Solve portfolio, with exact scoring walkthroughs.
McKinsey PST: Training for a Ghost Test
Every cycle, candidates discover mid-process that the PST advice they followed is obsolete — sometimes when the Solve invitation lands, sometimes when they fail it. The test changed; the prep has to change with it. Don't let outdated materials decide your 2027 intake.
FAQ
When did McKinsey replace the PST? McKinsey phased out the PST several years ago in favor of the Solve Game. The digital assessment is now standard across most offices.
Is PST prep useful for the Solve Game? Marginally — the quantitative reasoning foundation transfers. But PST materials teach nothing about game mechanics, scoring logic, or dynamic decision-making, which is where Solve is won or lost.
Do any McKinsey offices still use the PST? The Solve Game is the standard screen globally. If your office communicates otherwise, follow your invitation email — but expect Solve.
Where can I practice the Solve Game? McKinsey offers limited practice materials. For full interactive simulations of the actual games with scoring walkthroughs, our McKinsey prep package covers the complete Solve portfolio.
