M&G Case Study Interview: Format & Preparation
M&G's case study exercise hands you briefing materials, gives you limited prep time, and asks for a clear recommendation — often with Q&A from assessors. Candidates who walk in without a framework drown in the detail; candidates with a structure turn the same materials into a confident presentation. Here's the format and the framework.
The M&G Case Study Format
At the 2027 intake assessment centre, you'll receive a pack of materials — financial summaries, market context, maybe stakeholder views — and typically 20 to 30 minutes to prepare. Then you present your analysis and recommendation to assessors, usually for 5 to 10 minutes, followed by questions probing your reasoning. The materials are designed to contain more information than you need: part of the test is deciding what matters. There is rarely one "correct" recommendation; assessors score the quality of your thinking, the structure of your argument and how you handle challenge.
A Framework That Works Every Time
Use a simple four-step structure. First, frame the decision: state in one sentence what you're being asked to recommend. Second, analyse the key factors — pick three or four that actually drive the decision (returns, risk, client impact, feasibility) and ignore the noise. Third, recommend: state your conclusion clearly and early, then support it with your two strongest reasons. Fourth, acknowledge risks: name the main downside of your recommendation and how you'd mitigate it — this is what separates strong candidates from one-sided ones. Practise presenting this structure out loud against a timer; silent reading is not preparation for a spoken presentation.
How to Handle the Q&A
The Q&A is where assessors test whether your recommendation survives contact with criticism. Expect "what's the biggest risk in your proposal?" and "what would change your mind?" — both are gifts if you prepared your risk section honestly. Never get defensive: "that's a fair challenge — the data suggests X, though I'd want to verify Y" shows the intellectual honesty M&G wants in its analysts. If you genuinely don't know, say so and explain how you'd find out. Bluffing under questioning is the fastest way to fail this exercise. Structure Beats Brilliance
Nobody expects a perfect investment recommendation from 25 minutes of prep. Assessors expect clear thinking under pressure — a defined decision, a few factors that matter, a stated conclusion, an honest risk. The candidates who fail are the ones who summarise everything and recommend nothing. Pick a structure, commit to a recommendation, defend it calmly.
FAQ
Do I need finance knowledge for the case study? Basic commercial awareness helps, but the test is structured thinking, not technical expertise. All key data is in the pack.
Can I bring notes into the presentation? Usually yes — a one-page structure sheet is fine. Reading a script word-for-word is not.
How long is the presentation? Typically 5 to 10 minutes plus Q&A. Practise to finish inside the limit with time to spare.
Is the case individual or group? At M&G it's typically an individual exercise within the assessment centre day. Confirm details in your invitation.
