The 2027 JP Morgan Video Interview for Investment Banking is not asking for a reading list. It tests whether you investigated the program actively enough to form a specific, evidence-based view of the work and your fit.
The actual interview question
Here is the complete wording:
What steps have you taken to learn more about this program?
How you lose points
- Listing webpages: Reading the careers site is a starting point, not proof of serious investigation.
- Dropping names: Mentioning conversations without the insight gained or tested sounds performative.
- Researching only the firm: Company knowledge does not explain what you learned about the Investment Banking program.
- Repeating promotional language: Borrowed phrases show recall rather than independent judgment.
- Ending without a conclusion: Each research step should change your understanding, preparation, or decision to apply.
How you pass
Organise the answer as a sequence of questions you needed to resolve. Start with formal sources to understand the program's stated structure and responsibilities. Then use independent sources, relevant work samples, events, or conversations to test what the work requires in practice.
For each step, name the question, the action, and the conclusion. A conversation is useful when it clarifies a trade-off or corrects an assumption. Practical exploration is useful when it reveals which tasks hold your attention and which skills need work.
For a hypothetical example, a candidate might first map the program description, then speak with a recent participant about how junior responsibilities develop, and finally complete a valuation exercise to test interest in the analytical work. This example is hypothetical. A real answer should use only steps the candidate actually took and avoid attributing unverified details to JP Morgan.
- State the questions your research needed to answer.
- Use more than one type of credible source.
- Explain what each step taught or corrected.
- Connect the findings to your own evidence and preferences.
- Show how the research changed your preparation.
The strongest answer is cumulative. Every step narrows the gap between a public description of the program and your own informed reason for pursuing it.
