BDO Teamwork Question 2027: What Assessors Score
The BDO teamwork question — commonly reported by candidates as "Describe a situation where you worked as part of a team" — is scored on three things: your specific contribution (not the team's), how you handled the human dynamics, and the outcome. STAR is the structure: Situation, Task, Action (your moves), Result. "We" for outcomes, "I" for your decisions.
What This BDO Teamwork Question Assesses
Audit and advisory work happens in teams, so assessors test whether you're someone others want on their engagement. They're listening for collaboration signals: did you communicate proactively, support struggling teammates, and take ownership of your workstream? Lone-hero stories fail; invisible-passenger stories fail faster.
How to Answer This BDO Teamwork Question
Make your role unmistakable while crediting the team:
- Situation and Task (25%). Set the scene fast: the team, the goal, the constraint. Example line: "Five of us had four weeks to deliver a consulting-style project for a local charity, and I owned the financial analysis workstream."
- Action (55%). Describe your specific contributions: the analysis you built, how you coordinated with others, and one human moment — helping a teammate who was behind, or adapting when plans changed. That human detail is what assessors remember.
- Result (20%). State the outcome and your part in it. Then add a brief reflection on what the experience taught you about working in teams.
Balance pronouns deliberately: "I" for decisions and actions you took, "we" for collective effort and results. All-"we" hides your contribution; all-"I" suggests you don't value others.
Common Mistakes
- No visible personal contribution. Describing what the team did without isolating your role leaves the assessor guessing what you'd actually bring.
- Skipping the difficult moment. Every real team project has friction or a setback — omitting it makes the story sound sanitized and gives assessors nothing to probe.
- Taking all the credit. Claiming the team's win as your personal victory signals exactly the wrong teamwork instincts.
Candidates commonly report that BDO assessors probe the team dynamics hardest: "What did the others contribute?" and "What would they say about working with you?" Rehearse honest answers — this question is as much a character check as a competency one.

FAQ
Can I use a university group project? Yes — it's the most common source and perfectly acceptable. What matters is a real role and a real outcome, not a prestigious setting.
What about sports teams or part-time jobs? Both work well. Sports show reliability under pressure; part-time jobs show you can collaborate with people you didn't choose.
How long should the answer be? Two to three minutes. Enough for one human detail and one concrete contribution; longer and the assessor stops listening.
Should I mention a leadership role? Only if you actually led. Being a strong contributor is equally valuable — don't inflate your role.
