Choose a story where teamwork changed the outcome
The 2027 Barclays Video Interview is not asking for proof that you enjoy group work. This prompt rewards a story in which people had different information, priorities, or working styles and your response helped them reach one common goal.
The question on screen
You are asked:
Describe a time when you had to work with a group or team to achieve a common goal.
Common answers that fall flat
- The passenger story: You describe what the team delivered but not a decision you made.
- The hero story: You imply that everyone else failed and you completed the work alone.
- The process dump: Too much project detail hides the collaboration signal.
- The invisible tension: Without a constraint or disagreement, your actions appear unnecessary.
- The lesson-only ending: Reflection cannot replace evidence of an actual team outcome.
Make your intervention the center
Frame the answer around one moment when the group could have missed its goal. Perhaps a hypothetical student consulting team disagreed about which customer segment to recommend. You compared the competing evidence, invited the quietest member to challenge both views, and proposed a simple decision rule. The group then aligned around a recommendation it could defend.
- State the goal and your role without unnecessary background.
- Show the point where collaboration became necessary.
- Describe how you listened, clarified, or redistributed work.
- Report the result and give teammates appropriate credit.
The interviewer should be able to name your collaborative behavior after the recording ends. If the story only proves that the team was successful, revise it.
