Why this prompt is difficult
This prompt tests judgment under a communication mismatch. The interviewer wants to see how you read the audience and choose a better route.
Question shown in the assessment
Tell us about a time when you changed your communication approach to better convey a message to a customer or teammate. Describe the situation, the steps you took, and the outcome.
Common mistakes to remove
- Using a story where the message worked immediately
- Blaming the listener for not understanding
- Saying you “simplified it” without describing how
- Reporting a positive reaction instead of a business or team outcome
How to build the response
- Name the original mismatch without criticising the audience.
- Describe the observation or feedback that prompted the change.
- Make the revised approach concrete enough to visualise.
- Close with both the outcome and what the experience changed in your practice.
Keep the context brief and give most time to the adjustment. A credible response shows several linked decisions, such as reframing the message around the listener’s priorities, changing the medium and verifying their understanding.
